“Cars and knives can kill people too! Why aren’t we banning guns?”

Because guns are purpose-build to kill, maim, or injure their targets. Full stop. They were invented as an advancement on technology designed to kill. Cars have a wide range of uses and are designed specifically to kill as few people as possible in a dire situation. Knives are common cooking utensils, and you might as well argue against electricity, since that, too, is dangerous.

This is one of the many disingenuous arguments you are likely to hear from the pro-gun crowd. It is insideous because, like many of their arguments, it removes vital context and history surrounding the issue and boils it down into an easy talking point that requires 10x more characters to disprove than it does to type.
